Celebrity Encounter: Eres Tu Juan!

Eres Tu JuanMuch to the amazement and delight of my wife and daughters, we all met the season four winner of Objetivo Fama, Juan the other night. In what can only be described as a dream come true for them, Juan came to our home to play basketball. Well if you consider home, the community where we live.

A little history first. I really, really dislike Ojetivo Fama and American Idol. Oops, did I write that? I thought I was only thinking it. How can a show with 19 losers on it be so popular? Well, just kidding, sort of.

When our neighborhood was built, an agreement was made with the nearest municipality that if they paid for the lights and maintenance of the basketball court, the court would be open to the public.

So once or twice a week a group of young guys come to play basketball in our neighborhood. And I'll have to confess, they are very well behaved. To my knowledge we've never had any type of problems with them; they treat the court as their own and show the proper respect. I guess so much so, that a friend of Juan's who regularly plays there, invited him to come play.

Well word spread fast throughout the neighborhood, and soon a small crowd of adoring fans emerged. So how did Juan react? Well the personae you see of him on television is pretty much the real deal. He stopped playing basketball for a while and politely, and with humility, signed all the autographs and posed for all the pictures his fans asked for.

In a classic Puerto Rican scene, the picture above is Juan talking on some women's telephone to one of her friends proving to the friend that, the woman was, in fact, standing right beside Juan. You know the drill, "No really, he's right here. I'll prove it to you. I'm going to put him on the phone. Tell her you're really Juan, go on tell her!" ¡Viste, te lo dije!

Los 50 Más Bellos 2008

Noelia, click for da sweetnessPeople Magazine, en Español, has released it's list of the 50 most beautiful people issue. And of course, there is a nice list of Puertorriqueños. To start, reggaeton superstar Ivy Queen and Miss Universe Dayanara grace the cover of the magazine with other Latin celebrities Angélica Rivera, Marlene Favela, Myrka Dellanos, Christina Aguilera, Sofía Vergara, and Danna García.

This year, the magazine selected Noelia for the first time to join the list of the most beautiful. Noelia, who was born as Noelia Lorenzo Monge on August 31, 1977, is a pop singer and actress who rose to fame in 1999. She is the first daughter of Puerto Rican singer Yolandita Monge and Alfredo Lorenzo.

Other Puertorriqueños that made the list this year are: Giselle Blondett, the husband and wife pair of Luis Fonsi and Adamari López, and Daddy Yankee. In total the list has 29 women and 21 men.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Simpsons Star"Una de estas cosas no es como las otras" used to be the little musical introduction into a matching game on Sesame Street. I'm sure you remember it warmly, as I do. So in honor of that game, I have a new episode for today. Tell me which of the items in this list doesn't belong with the others.

"Robert Redford, Mel Gibson, Jane Fonda, Ricky Martin, Clint Eastwood, and John Denver"

What did you come up with? I know this is a tricky one, but here goes. Only one of these celebrities will have a star on the infamous "Hollywood Walk of Fame" after next year. Can you pick which one? Eeehhh. I'm sorry, the correct answer, the one which doesn't belong with the others is: Ricky Martin.

Yes our own little Ricky Martin will earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Shame before Clint "Do you feel lucky punk" Eastwood. As it turns out the Hollywood streets which are adorned with immortal stars, such as Pee Wee Herman, Big Bird, and Rin Tin Tin, is actually available to celebrities in five different categories:

  • movie stars & directors
  • television
  • singers, song writers, and recording artists
  • radio luminaries
  • live stage performers.
Each category has a different symbol to identify the category. By the way, the celebrity with the most stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is singing-cowboy Gene Autry, who earned five different "stars," one in each of the above categories.

Also, the only other Puerto Ricans with stars are José Ferrer, Tito Puente, and José Feliciano.

Puerto Rico in the 1940's and 1950's

I came across this amazing collection of photographs taken in Puerto Rico by missionary workers from the 1940's and 1950's. The collection of photographs is available in Flickr from a set created by Tom Lehman. Apparently he has been scanning slides taken by his Father and many other missionaries who worked at hospitals at La Plata and Castaner.

According to Lehman his objective is to: show what life was like in those countries before modernization began. An interesting and very important perspective.

Ironing with charcoal ironBut we have WII elbow...

This photograph shows a young woman ironing a shirt. Not really that significant until you realize that she is using a iron heated by burning charcoals.

This story brings home to me one of my mother-in-laws' favorite well when I grew up we had to walk 2 miles in the snow to get to school story. Of course, minus the snow part. But listening to her and to finally see a picture (since I'm mostly visual in nature) makes her story come to life. As we say here, ironing a shirt with a heavy steel iron filled with burning coal is a large male goat.

I'll never tell her, but I really enjoy listening to her stories. It really gives you a sense of how far (and fast) Puerto Rico has come in the last 50 years. Which many say, including yours truly, has taken its toll on Puerto Rico. Listening to her stories I also got a sense that before Operation Bootstrap, Puerto Rico has a very humble country filled with survivors. A population focused in overcoming the challenges they face. How far we've fallen.
Plowing with oxen
In the place of humility and survival, we now have a population filled with vanity and over-consumption. It's easy to see how our former condition has led to the current one. But at the same time, I believe that we've lost our cultural connection to our shared past. Without a doubt, the early decades of the 20th century were hard ones for Puerto Ricans, but we've lost our previous innocence and have become drunk on our new found abundance.

My point here is not to wish for, or over-glamorize (is that even possible when looking at these photos), a return to these forlorn days. However, I do wish for more humility among the populace and for us to recapture our sense of survival. Not in the sense of survival of the richest, but survival of a culture, survival of a history, survival of a country. We face huge challenges. And I believe the only way we'll be able to overcome them is through regaining our sense of solidarity that while we all may have different dogma, we all share a singular past that forevers unites us.

More Education Means Higher Wages In Puerto Rico

The following excerpts are from a United States Census Bureau survey conducted in 2005:

"A college degree can translate into higher earnings for workers in Puerto Rico — about twice as much on average as those with just a high school diploma — according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS). The contrast in annual earnings was even greater for people with advanced degrees, who earned about three times as much as those with a high school degree."
"Looking at earnings by educational attainment, adults 25 and older in Puerto Rico with a master’s, professional or doctorate degree earned a median income of $35,600. Those with a bachelor’s degree had a median income of $24,600, double that for those with a high school diploma, who earned a median income of $12,200 a year. Those who did not have a high school diploma had a median income of about $9,500."
"The 2005 PRCS found that more than one-in-five people age 25 and older had a bachelor’s degree or higher — a 21 percent increase since 2000. Those with an advanced degree went up by 19 percent. The percentages with a bachelor’s degree or higher varied by municipalities. Guaynabo (41 percent) was about double the commonwealth’s rate (21 percent). Some of the other municipalities included Bayamon (24 percent), Caguas (24 percent), Carolina (26 percent), San Juan (32 percent), Toa Alta (25 percent) and Trujillo Alto (30 percent). Additionally, females (23 percent) had a greater proportion of bachelor’s degrees or higher than males (18 percent)."

"The number with a high school degree also went up significantly in the same time frame — an 18 percent increase. The overall proportion with a high school degree or higher was 66 percent, or two-out-of-three people on the island. The figure for those with only a high school degree was 24 percent or about one in four. The rates for some of the municipalities were Bayamon (72 percent), Caguas (71 percent), Carolina (77 percent), Guaynabo (77 percent), San Juan (73 percent), Toa Alta (73 percent), Toa Baja (73 percent) and Trujillo Alto (73 percent). Females had roughly the same proportion of high school diplomas or higher as males (67 percent and 65 percent, respectively)."
And finally a smörgåsbord of other tasty results:
  • In 2005, the percent of people age 1 and over who lived in a different house from one year ago was 8.7 percent.
  • The average household size was 3.08.
  • About 39 percent of households had one or more people under the age of 18.
  • Forty-eight percent of all households were composed of married-couple families.
  • Thirty-two percent of married-couple families had both spouses in the labor force.
  • Fifty-three percent of children under age 6 who lived with their parents had both parents in the labor force.
  • About 31 percent of all households had someone 65 years or over.
  • About one-in-eight people were living on a retirement income.
  • Nineteen percent of the civilian population 16 and over worked in the service industry.
  • Eleven percent of the civilian employed population 16 and over was in the manufacturing industry.

El pueblo de Carolina está llorando

This morning the Honorable José Aponte de la Torre died suffering a respiratory obstruction that combined with renal failure in the Hospital del Maestro, where he was in the Intensive Care Unit for 27 days. The mayor was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital del Maestro after starting to suffer respiratory problems linked to his almost 50-year-old smoking habit.

Aponte had been mayor of the Autonomous Municipality of Carolina for 22 years, after first being elected in 1984. During his years of service Aponte in two occasions occupied the vice presidency and presidency of the Mayors Association, a forum from where he raised his voice in defense of the autonomy of municipal governments. In addition, the influential PDP mayor was a fervent defender of the U.S. Navy’s exit from Vieques, a cause for which he served prison time. Aponte de la Torre was arrested twice for invading military land in Vieques.

Both the municipality of Carolina and the commonwealth governments have declared seven days of mourning out of respect for the distinguished mayor. In the wake of the emptied office, the central committee of the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) in that city will be the entity to decide who will occupy the municipal post until the next elections.

Daddy Yankee Sets Release of "The Cartel: The Big Boss" for June 5

The Big BossInterscope Records, label for Reggaeton Superstar Daddy Yankee, has announced that the artist's first studio album in three years, "The Cartel: The Big Boss", will be available on June 5.

The new album will feature such diverse guest artists as Fergie, Jim Jones, Nicole Scherzinger from The Pussycat Dolls, Akon, and Will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas. Both Akon and Will.i.am will also produce the album, as will Mr. ColliPark (aka DJ Smurf) and Scott Storch . Storch will produce the first single from the album, "Impacto", along with Reggaeton producers Eli "El Musicologo", Tiny Tunes, Diesel and Menace.

"Reggaeton needs a change and I'm changing too," says Daddy Yankee. "You can't rest on the past. This album is very different. My roots are still there but now there's more, a side of me people haven't seen, including hip-hop. And I know the power music has too. I'm a leader in Latin culture. The album talks about the role we're playing in society. For people that don't know what's happening, we need to let them know what's going on."

Daddy Yankee's influence within the genre is matched by his entrepreneurial vision. Besides being founder and CEO of his own record label and management company, he is one of Pepsi's Hispanic spokespersons and for sportswear powerhouse Reebok has created "Daddy Yankee by Rbk," a footwear, clothing and accessory line.

Talento de Barrio, his first film, as actor and executive producer, is slated for release later this year. The reggaeton star recently celebrated his first anniversary as the host of the Daddy Yankee On Fuego Radio Show, a nationally syndicated radio show on ABC Radio Networks which airs on 29 affiliates.

But, while his own career has blown sky high, Daddy Yankee has not forgotten where he has come from either. He has partnered with the Puerto Rico Department of Education to lead a school cleaning and beautification program and he also continues to be a spokesperson for the American Red Cross in the U.S. Hispanic community. In addition he is a member of the Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet that reaches out to a new generation of volunteers and encourages people of all races, ages and ethnicities to support the Red Cross in their community. In 2007, Daddy Yankee will launch his own charitable organization, Fundacion Corazon Guerrero.

Search for the CW Girl - Second Update

Time is running out...Well it looks like the open casting call has saved the product manager for the "Search for the CW Girl". There are 39 new videos that were uploaded on the same day and all of the videos have the wanna-bees reading from a set script. In addition, the "models" are all standing in front of the same two backgrounds. So I'm sure they are the result of the casting call.

Besides these 39 participants there are nine (9) new participants, bringing to a toal of 14 user generated videos and 53 toal videos. So with the open casting call, they met their minimum top 20 to finish the contest (although they are still 6 shy from entries submitted over the Internet). They are still some 55 hours remaining to receive entries, however I don't think they will top 60 entries.

At this time, the top videos are still up for grabs, but Kristhina has the top rated video and Beatriz's video has been viewed the most times, with 7,157 views.

Aviso: Locura en JC Penney's

You don't know what crowded is...Building on some recent experiences, which have once again reminded me of how many gatos we are crammed onto this little island, I predict a major scene at JC Penney's in Plaza Las Americas tomorrow around 5:00 PM. Why? Well Juan Luis Guerra will make an in-store appearance in promotion of his new CD "La llave de mi corazón".

I mean think about it. The guy has a number one hit on his hands with his title cut "La llave de mi corazón", and has a long distinguished career with his band 4.40. With hundreds of thousands of fanatics on the island, I imagine just about every one of them will go and want to get close to him. In other words, if I were you, I'd avoid JC Penney's like the plague tomorrow around 5:00 PM. I can even see the madness spilling out into Plaza Las Americas in parking shortages and other assorted manifestations of overpopulation and intense heat.

Search for the CW Girl - Update

Checking in our favorite user generated content contest in Puerto Rico, we have a new entry. Yes, that's right, since last Thursday, only one additional 30 second entry was uploaded to the PR Mix The CW web site. We now have Lizze from Gurabo to consider. In the hunt to get the top 20 videos, they now need 17 more entries to start the public voting. Hey, they only need two more entries to complete the five final entries.

Top 20 countdown: 17 remaining!
Five finalist countdown: 2 remaining!
Time remaining: 13 days and about 3 hours.

If I was the event coordinator or product manager for this brand, I'd be getting a little nervous by this point. Maybe some more advertising would help, but when your primary sponsor Primera Hora, doesn't even support your contest on their web site, you're in trouble.

The search is on! Could it be you?

Could it be you?My how the American dream has changed. It used to be that when you were young, you knew that when you grew up you could be anything you put your mind to. Of course, you knew that it might take a lot of hard work and preparation, but with a little bit of elbow grease you had a shot. But now that I'm a little older and a little, well I'm older, I now wonder, what the hell is elbow grease?

Now let's flash forward to the Internet-ready broadband reality of the 21st century. Today the young-ens also believe in the American dream, but it comes through reality television and contests, instead of hard work and what ever passes for elbow grease, that is if we knew what it meant in the first place. So it is that a new form of this fast track to stardom has reached Puerto Rico with the "Search for the CW Girl" contest. CW, is an abbreviation of CW Puerto Rico (WSJP-30), the CW network affiliate in Puerto Rico, owned and operated by Caribbean Broadcasting Network. The station can be seen on OneLink, Liberty, Choice Cable, DirectTV (channel 178) and Dish Network (Channel 17).

Still not sure what the CW is, hey I wasn't. That's why I looked it up. The CW Television Network is a television network in the United States launched during the 2006-07 television season. It features a mixture of programming from both UPN and The WB television networks, which ceased independent operations on September 15, 2006 and September 17, 2006 respectively. According to CW's President of Entertainment Dawn Ostroff, the network's "shows are going to appeal to the 18- to 34-year-olds." The CW is a joint venture between CBS Corporation, owner of UPN, and Warner Bros. Entertainment, a subsidiary of Time Warner, majority owner of The WB. Its name derives from the first letter of the names of these two corporations (CBS and Warner).

Okay, I'm up to date. If you're playing along at home, the score is 0-1 in the category of pop culture and television (of course, it would help if I had cable, oh yeah, and I watched television, but that's another post). If you're still not straight, let me lay it down. Here we have an American television station affiliated here in Puerto Rico. They are sponsoring a contest only available for Puerto Rican women over the age of 18, where the online Internet community will choose the finalists. Text messaging will select the winner. The contest is open from March 6th, 2007 until March 26th, 2007, and is co-sponsored by Primera Hora. To participate, you must create a 30 second video and upload it to the PRMixCW.com web site, which is in English. And get this, besides being featured as the new CW girl, the winner will receive a $500 prize. Do you think you're the CW Girl they are looking for?

Additional details are available on the website. So far there are only two hopefuls, Debbie and Emily Rivera. However, it seems they were so, uh, mislead that they somehow were able to submit their entries before the contest started. Curious, well we'll keep an eye out for how the contest progresses. If I were involved in the planning for this contest, I'd have made sure to state my strongest case against the idea. I just don't think they are going to get the kind of reaction and participation that they are expecting. First, as the local police have expressed their outrage and insult by the Governor's recent proposal for a $100 bonus, I believe the prize for the contest is a little, uh, weak. Okay I think it sucks. Second, the whole idea of user generated content and participation has not caught on here in Puerto Rico. I'd say shelve this and try again in 3 to 5 years. I couldn't bring myself to read through all of the fine print in the contest rules, so I wonder what they will do if they don't get the response they expect.

See the two-headed heiress! Live, right before your eyes!

While I don't know why anyone would actually want to meet Paris Hilton, Macy's at Plaza Las America is selling the opportunity to do so. Well, let me take that back. It was kind of harsh. Now that I think of it I do know why anyone might want to meet her. It's kind of like when you go to the fair and they are selling the chance to see the world's largest rat or the bearded fat lady. Very few of us can resist the opportunity to see a freak, even if we know that it is a fake. For nothing more than being able to say, yeah I saw the snake woman, and "¡Que Embuste!" What a freak, you'd say. And I would say, that would be just about right.

For those of you who say, who is Paris Hilton. I first say "¡Bravo! Second I would say, what, do you live in a sensory deprivation chamber or what? According to Wikipedia:

"She initially became well known due to her participation in the reality series, The Simple Life, and also 1 Night in Paris; an unauthorized sex video of her with her then-boyfriend Rick Salomon, which was leaked onto the Internet in late 2003. She has since branched out into many careers, and recently, as of August 2006, she is making a bid at a music career with her debut pop album Paris."
So you've heard me sell this once in a lifetime opportunity to see the "Hilton Heiress Girl" the "Sex Tape Scandal Sultress" and you just can't resist. Well here is how to satisfy your morbid curiosity. First you have to go to Macy's and make a $49 purchase of the "Heiress" from Paris Hilton starting tomorrow. With the purchase you will receive an exclusive pass to meet Paris Thursday February 22nd. In addition, the first 200 clients that make the purchase will also receive the opportunity to receive the autograph of Paris. Of course, according to the obligatory small print, the autographed material must be authorized by Macy's.

Warning: Irony Warning!

But forget about the possible meeting and autographs, because those are subject to change or cancellation. If you purchase the new fragrance "Heiress" you will participate in the new standard for the social elite. Not only that, but you'll also be able to experiment the "magic" that is Paris Hilton. However as Glenda from the Wizard of Oz asked Dorothy "Are you a good witch or a bad witch?"

New music video and disc for Chayanne

ChayanneRecently, pop sensation Chayanne was in Quintay, just outside Santiago Chile, to film the video for his upcoming single "Si nos quedrara poco tiempo". The new single will arrive as part of his new record which is due in stores the 10th of April. Claudio Divella will direct the new video. Divella has also produced videos for Diego Torres, Gustavo Cerati, and Charly Garcia.

The video portrays ChayanneIvanna Sacanni leaving his house, like every day, while thinking that his life has fallen into a routine. As soon he thinks this, his life changes to consider the possibility of something terrible happening and recognizing the little time left in his life should be for love and the attention for his mate. And who wouldn't want to think about Ivanna Sacanni (go ahead, click on it...you'll thank me later!) if they were her mate. I mean hello, she's freaking hot.

The new album, which is still untitled, will be a typical production for the megastar. Within the disc there are eleven (11) songs, six ballads, including "Tengo miedo", and five livelier rythmic songs, such as "Lola".

Men in Black Humor

Laughing out LoudTwo of Puerto Rico's comedy giants are joining together to offer a new spectacle entitled "El bello y la bestia". Luis Raúl and Raymond Arrieta aim to make comedy history in their new offering.

Borrowing from the successful "Men in Black" movies, during their press conference they wore the "last suit that they'll ever wear" and carried metallic briefcases. As they approached reporters and photographers, they revealed their concealed water cannons and commenced to fire upon the press (Got to love that!)

On the 16th and 17th of March in the Centro de Bellas Artes in Caguas , the duo will offer up their best parodies, jokes, imitations, music, and characterizations in one mega-production. As they have put it " like nothing before ever seen in Puerto Rico". Translation: "The goofing around in our country no more than ever is the cause of what we are going through. It just makes you want to laugh". At least that's what I think it says, although I could be wrong.

The duo have very high expectations for this production, including presenting the show in various sites in the United States, recording a DVD and/or presenting the show as a "pay-per-view" channel. Further, the producer Rafo Muñiz, indicates that the pair have plans to make a movie together with a script already written by Arrieta.

Tickets for the event, which is only for adults, are on sale in TicketCenter and at the CBA in Caguas.

Oh yeah, you know she is wanted

Wings of DesireThe Puerto Rican actress Roselyn Sánchez was named one of the most deisrable women in the world, according to the portal AskMen.com. Based on votes of their community they select women, based on their desireablity score. The actress appears in position 31, out of 99. Shakira topped all other women, followed by Beyoncé Knowles, Scarlet Johanson, and Jessica Alba.

The desireability score is based on a combination of factors including: age, self-sufficiency, humor, intelligence, charisma, and ambition. Whereas most magazines and entertainment outlets might decide who are the world’s most desirable women based on the opinions of a handful of staffers, the women who appear on 2007’s list of the Top 99 Most Desirable Women were determined by the 8.5 million votes cast by AskMen.com readers.

Other latin women represented in the list include: Gisele Bundchen (14), Salma Hayek (32), Penélope Cruz (36), Elsa Benitez (37) and Sofia Vergara (42).
